Supply List

Please note you do not need to run out and buy all these new supplies (unless, of course, you were hoping for an excuse and then by all means), this supply list is for your reference and to make things a bit easier (some clickable links).

Quite often you can make do with what you have or swap out one brand for another although it is always fun to experiment and play with different materials and see what different artists are using.

Often on our journey its easy to think that if you just had the right this or that, or new this or that, then your work would progress. The most important thing is showing up to the practice of creating. The odd supply might be essential for one lesson here or there but if you have a general supply of basics you should be fine- improvise & experiment like an artist. Below  you will find the supply lists from the presenters but remember you can swap things out, choose your own colours and improvise.

Be sure that this supply list doesn't overwhelm you- use what you have :) Don't let not having the "right" supplies stop you from creating. This list is just a reference.

Also note many of the artists will walk you through the supplies in the lessons.

One of the pitfalls when working with mixed media is to buy loads of art supply and then not use them. There are so many fun things to buy BUT you can get a long way with a few supplies and use a lot of scraps and simple tools. Here is the list of the supply that I used in the class:

  • Selection of watercolors. You do not need to use the same brands or colors as me!Just use whatever you happen to have.
  • Selection of watercolor brushes - it is helpful to have some different sizes. Roundbrushes or quill brushes are the best for painting leaves and flowers, although youcan also use a liner brush for the stalks and small details. My brushes are a mixtureof Jacksons art own brand synthetic watercolor brushes, some from the SAA("society of all artists" here in the UK), and I also have some fromhttps://www.schimoniart.com/shop/brushes/ Just use whatever you have butspecial watercolor brushes are much better than all purpose mixed media brushes.
  • Watercolor paper (I use mostly Fabriano 280gsm cold pressed) 300gsm is the bestweight (mine is 280gsm but any less than this and your paper might buckle)
  • You may want to put some white highlights and for this I recommend PH MartinBleed proof white. Alternatives are: white gouache, white acrylic ink or a whitepaint pen

  • Choose your surface: I have chosen some paper from two Stillman and Birn Zeta Series spiral bound sketchbooks - one white, one toned tan. You should use whatever paper you prefer, or have on hand!
  • Choose your palette: I am playing with Conte  A Paris pencils and sticks, but any dry media will work brilliantly. Think pastels, coloured pencils, charcoal, graphite - or a combination. The sky is the limit! I have used a couple of shades of Sanguine, Sepia, Black, White, and Yellow

Lesson 1
  • Choose your surface: I have used a Moleskine Sketchbook. You should use whatever paper you prefer, or have on hand
  • Choose your medium: I am playing with graphite, my first love. Graphite comes in many forms - traditional pencils, mechanical pencils, woodless pencils. What do you have on hand that you can play with today? Maybe you would rather play with colour? Go for it!

Lesson 2

  • Choose your surface: I have used an unprepared wood slice. You should use whatever surface that will accept wet media/paper you prefer, or have on hand!
  • Choose your palette: I am playing with Daniel Smith watercolours in Bloodstone, Moonglow, Shadow Violet, Buff, Piemonite Genuine, Burgundy Yellow Ochre, Tigers Eye, and WN Designer Gouache in white. You do not need to use these colours specifically though, use what you have on hand, create a palette of colours that you love!
