Meet the Artist- Pam Thorburn
Hi, I am a self taught mixed media artist living in the beautiful and historic city of Edinburgh, Scotland.
For me, art is more about the process than than the product.
I love trying out new materials, new techniques and new subject matter. I love getting lost in the moment as I play ,experiment and try to solve problems and to explore the ‘what ifs?…’
I started my art journey via paper crafts, stamping and art journalling. This evolved into abstract painting and more recently I have developed an interest in still life. I love that still life painting can be so personal, telling the story of us through the things we collect, the things we eat, the tools we use. I love that still-life painting is unrestricted by style and we can bring our own aesthetic to the subject matter.

What does Art is Magic mean to you?
Being part of the Art is Magic community is a fabulous experience. I love being able to connect with other artists through such a wide variety of classes and workshops.
Taking online workshops has been a huge part of my journey to becoming an artist. Through participation in a variety of online classes over the years I now have at my fingertips a wide repertoire of techniques that I can draw upon to create my own individual art.
I love to experiment and explore. For me, the process is the part I enjoy the most-finding out how far I can push the paint, answering the ‘what if’ questions…What if I change this light to dark? What is I add some collage? What if I scrape the wet paint off? Painting is all about solving problem and I love that.
At the moment I am loving creating still life paintings. We are surrounded by subject matter for still-life paintings, and by taking away the what to paint dilemma I have the freedom to explore the process.
If I could give my younger self any advice about becoming an artist it would just be to start, turn up and paint every day purely for the joy of the process.
