Meet the Artist- Francisca Nunes

Hi, I'm a mixed-media arti

st from Portugal. I enjoy delving into the spontaneous creative process, which I've found to be a powerful way to combine my passions for botany, nature, and art. Through experimenting with nature, color, texture, collages, and marks, I explore my creativity and love to share it with other creative souls. I teach online classes to encourage others to tap into their own creative potential. I strongly believe that every person has a creative spark and that Art Journaling and mixed media explorations offer a safe space to explore and express our inner voice without the limitations of rules, judgments, or fears. It's an intimate and rewarding journey of self-discovery that I love to share with others.

What does your creative Practice look like?

My creative practice involves a lot of experimentation and exploration. I love working with different materials and techniques and exploring nature as a medium and inspiration. I also draw a lot of inspiration from nature and incorporate elements of botany and the natural world into my art. My practice is very intuitive and often evolves as I work on a piece, allowing me to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of my creativity.

How do you keep your creative practice fresh and inspired?

To keep my creative practice fresh and inspired, I try to stay open to new ideas and experiences. I love exploring and I have no fears of exploring and mixing things and techniques, trying new techniques, and learning from other artists. I also find that taking breaks and stepping away from my work can be helpful, as it allows me to come back to it with fresh eyes and renewed energy. And of course, spending time in nature always helps to recharge my creative batteries!

What sort of creative walls do you hit? What do you do to move through them?

Like all artists, I sometimes hit creative walls where I feel stuck or uninspired. When this happens, I try to step back and look at my work from a new perspective. Sometimes this means taking a break and doing something else entirely, going to my garden, taking a nature walk, or taking pictures, while other times it means experimenting with new techniques or materials to shake things up. I also find that collaborating with other artists can be a great way to get new ideas and inspiration.

How has your process evolved?

My process has evolved a lot over the years. When I first started out, I was very focused on learning techniques and experimenting with different materials. As I have grown as an artist, my process has become much more intuitive and focused on self-expression. I am much more comfortable now with allowing my art to evolve organically and following my instincts, rather than trying to force it to fit a particular mold.

Do you have a Creative Self Care Practice?

As a mixed media artist with a love for nature and gardening, one of my favorite ways to practice self-care is by getting my hands dirty with soil and tending to my plants. I also find it grounding to connect with nature by taking walks and observing the colors and shapes of the natural world around me. These experiences help me to feel inspired and connected to the beauty of the world, which ultimately fuels my creative expression in my art.

Do you have any creative rituals?

I find that creating the right environment is an important part of my creative practice. Before starting any project, I like to take some time to prepare my space by lighting a candle, burning some incense, and clearing my area. I then like to begin with some warm-up exercises, often in my handmade journals, to allow myself to create freely and intuitively. This helps me get into the flow and feel inspired to start my projects.
