For me, art is magic because it holds the power to transform—both the materials in my hands and the emotions in my heart. It is alchemy, turning torn paper, forgotten scraps and color into something deeply meaningful, something that speaks beyond words. I have witnessed the way art can soften grief, offer comfort, and bring light into the darkest corners of our lives. It has been my refuge, my guide, and my way of making sense of the world.
The magic of art is not in perfection or technique but in the unfolding, in the way it invites us to listen to our intuition, to trust the process, and to let something unseen take shape. Art connects us to ourselves, to each other, and to something greater. That, to me, is true magic.
Why do I create art?
I create art because I have to—because it is how I process the world, how I hold joy and sorrow in the same hands, how I find meaning in the mess. Art has been my refuge, my sanctuary.
I create because the act of making—tearing paper, layering materials, adding color, assembling—reminds me that beauty can be found in the unexpected. That even the broken pieces have a place. That transformation is possible, not just on the canvas, but within myself.
I create because art is a conversation—between past and present, between what is seen and what is felt, between me and those who find something of themselves in my work. It is my way of reaching out, of saying you are not alone.
And ultimately, I create art because it feels like breathing—essential, natural, and filled with life.
Do I have any creative rituals?
Yes, my creative process begins with small rituals that help me step into a space of ease and presence. I always start by lighting a candle on my art table—a quiet signal to myself that it’s time to create. Then, I make a cup of tea and bring it into the studio, letting its warmth settle me into the moment.
Sometimes, I gather a few inspirational objects—often treasures from a nature walk. A dried leaf, a smooth stone, a feather—simple reminders of beauty and connection. Before I begin, I like to set an intention for my creative time, giving it an extra layer of meaning. It’s a way of inviting possibility, of making space for art to be both a practice and a form of restoration.
These small rituals help me move gently into my work, allowing creativity to unfold in its own time, in its own way.
Tell us about your journey to become an artist?
My journey to becoming an artist has been anything but linear—more like a layered collage, with pieces of different careers and experiences coming together over time. I grew up off-the-grid in Ontario, Canada, surrounded by nature’s quiet magic, which planted the seeds of creativity early on. But my path first led me into archaeology, where I learned to uncover hidden stories in the earth. Later, I spent a decade as a professional photographer in Toronto’s entertainment industry, capturing stories through a different lens.
Along the way, I became a certified teacher and later a certified art therapy practitioner, drawn to the power of creativity in education and healing. About 15 years ago, I found my true home in mixed media art, where I could bring all these layers together—storytelling, exploration, and emotional depth. Now, I create art inspired by nature and the divine feminine, show and sell my art in galleries, and teach others through online and in-person workshops. It’s been a winding journey, but every piece of it has shaped the artist and teacher I am today.
