Meet the Artist - Meghann Early
Meghann Early is a collage and mixed media artist born and raised in New York City. She is passionate about art as ritual and is a big fan of process over end product. Her favorite materials to work with are recycled and she believes that art is a powerful healing modality that everyone should have access to.
What does Art is Magic mean to you?
To me all artists are magicians because we are using out hands and hear to create something out of nothing, and what could be more magical than that? I am so passionate about process art because just the act of “doing” can be so incredibly helpful in releasing nervous energy, focusing, and grounding. Art is magical because it is something that anyone can do and find community in.
What sort of creative walls do you hit?
I find that I hit creative walls when I am overthinking whatever project I am working on. When I stop creating for myself and find myself creating only for the gaze and approval of other people on social media or whatever.
What do you do to move through them?
I stop what I am doing and ask myself: Who is this for? Even if I am creating a class for others I try to create something that I also enjoy doing the entire time. Sometimes this means that I go in with a loose plan and create as I go along if I am finding that my original idea is not working. Basically I stop trying to force things that are not working.
Do you have any creative rituals?
I love to work at my dining table so I can be around my husband and my 4 year old while I create. On Friday evenings I like to make myself a warm beverage and spread all my journaling stuff out and just create. I sometimes watch a quiet YouTube video and really just try to enjoy my time in my warm and cozy home doing something I love with people I love nearby.
