Whitney Freya is an expert in Inspired Living, the author of three books on personal creativity, the most recent being 30 Days to Unstoppable. She is also an inspirational speaker and the leader of a community that circles around the fire of inspiration & personal freedom through her online programs and coaching training.
Since 1996, when Whitney dared to open an art center with ZERO art background, she has been committed to creating her own most inspired life & then helping others to do the same. Turns out, what we spend our most attention on, and where we send our intention (often without awareness) is truly what determines our life experience.
For her, learning to live as a Life Artist gives the perfect perspective through which we can TAKE BACK our power. What does that mean? It means going within to reconnect to what you want, what LIGHTS YOU UP, what INSPIRES you, what calls to your FEARLESS self & what you want to CREATE in this lifetime. Whitney strives to FREE people from the āshouldsā and āhave-tosā and reconnect them to the present moment
magic that will take their breath away!
What does Art is Magic mean to you?
When we make art we are engaging in a powerful energy of transformation as well as activating a connection that we each have to our own infinitely creative self. I have witnessed lives changed, Infinite Beings channeled through paintings, and intuitive gifts dramatically heightened all through a personal painting practice.
Why do you create art?
For me, art is a way of knowing and being. I would not be who I am without it. I feel like I engage in the unseen world, the subtle realms, and receive invaluable guidance, insight and wisdom from my painting practice.
Tell us about your journey to become an artist?
I grew up a TOTAL wanna-be artist until age 26 when I opened an art center. I literally had never painted on a canvas when I opened the doors. I learned along with my clients and experienced quantum leaps because I now owned an art center! I couldnāt give up or tell myself that I sucked because I was busy encouraging everyone else around me. It was amazing to witness the power of removing ALL the excuses or limiting beliefs.
Tell us about your journey to claim the title artist?
For me, we are all artists and the art we are creating is our life. The canvas makes visible how powerfully we create our reality and that when we do so WITH awareness, harnessing the creative principles (like what you focus on expands) we can create a life that inspires us.
What is it about making art that stirs your soul?
I am dancing with the mystery while also getting to know my āhuman self.ā The canvas becomes a mirror, showing me where I am holding back, playing small, being to self-critical, etc. I am a better BEing because I paint.
What is currently inspiring you?
Learning and teaching about the qualities of feminine power and artistry.
What does your creative Practice look like?
I paint with acrylic paints in layers and layers. In the first layer I usually paint words of intention or I AM statements. Each painting is inspired by a desire⦠to learn something, to step into new levels of authenticity, to let go of old programming, etc. Then, I paint colors and play with form and texture until an image or symbol reveals itself. As I bring the subject into focus it is like I am having a conversation with my Infinite Self. I am being guided and taught, or prepared for what might be around the corner. Sometimes the āreasonā I painted something becomes more clear months later.
How do you keep your creative practice fresh and inspired?
I am always learning and growing⦠it is all about the journey, so there is no end to the facets of being an Infinite Being expressing itself as Whitney Freya on this planet right now. I ask myself, what are all the ways I can express myself more authentically, more powerfully today?
What sort of creative walls do you hit?
Since I am creating and painting for my full time work, sometimes it is challenging to just paint loose and for fun, with no outcome. I find myself attaching a goal or āproductā to a painting and that can momentarily kill the mood.
What do you do to move through them?
I shift my focus to having a conversation with my painting. Each painting feels very alive and dynamic. I let it be who it wants to be!
How has your process evolved?
Well, when I opened my art center 26 years ago, I would not have answered the question above like that! LOL It has become dramatically more multi-dimensional.
What do you wish you had known at the beginning of your creative journey?
Nothing. Every step, each chapter, hurdle, celebration⦠has all been invaluable stepping stones.
Do you have a Creative Self Care Practice?
I honor the cyclical nature of life, of my life. I do not beat myself up for ānot painting in a while.ā I see life as my creative practice and am very happy to be experiencing life as it is right now.
Do you have any creative rituals?
SO many! And I never do anything the same all the time as rituals go. Sometimes I create little altars in my studio for a project. Or it can be as simple as lighting a candle. I love to pull an oracle card while I am painting, especially if I desire some new inspiration.
